A man's view on relationships and dating. Some cringe-worthy insights, but definitely a male perspective.

who hurt you?

This is pretty clearly what happens when a woman who feels bad about loving Roth writes a novel that drops a Roth-esque hero into contemporary society and attempts to skewer him (deservedly) for his narcissistic chauvinism while demonstrating all the ways the world and a procession of women will conspire to keep his mediocre ass afloat.

But it ain’t half bad.

Thought I was going to hate this but it was a gently comical, uncomfortably realistic depiction of dating in Brooklyn.

Nate isn't quite as annoying as George (of The Book of George), but his story also isn't as interesting. After an enjoyable beginning, it moves into Nate's reiterative internal justification for inconsiderate behavior that provokes, at best, a kind of tired irritation, much like the emotional arc of his love affairs. His hopelessness and oblivious privilege are mundane (albeit realistic and well-written).

“Insufferable” is the word that ran through my head a gazillion times when given a glimpse inside Nate’s mind. Also could not shake the nagging feeling that I have read this before – so I’ve either started and not finished this, or know some dudes who rise to this level of asshole. Maybe both?

All that said, I did appreciate the fact that it was written by a woman. Would not have made it further than a few chapters if I wasn’t convinced that she has some superhuman ability to channel an insufferable man’s perspective. Byeeeeee
