Not what I was expecting at all. The writing is choppy and seemingly without plot as who is to say that Deborah is really "cured" by the end of this novel? If the choppiness and non-clarity in the writing style were supposed to make the reader feel what it is like to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, then well done. Now I am not an expert in psychology but it seemed to point out that schizophrenia was socially contracted (aka inherited through early childhood trauma) and ignored any biological conditions. This book contains a lot of triggers such as mental illness, attempted suicide and self-harm, patient abuse, and anti-semitism. This book was published in the 1960s and paints a picture of what psychological hospitals were at this time as well as social views at the time.

Wow. This is one of the most brutally honest and beautifully done depictions of mental illness I have ever encountered.

I especially loved the naritive style of this story and they way it would occasionally weave other characters into focus.

A book that I loved, an absolute must read, and now a favorite of mine. It’s a book that will live on my shelves forever and I would re-read in the future. I would pick up anything else by this author without question. This book is now one of my all-time favorites.

As someone who has suffered from anxiety and depression their whole life and has considered admitting myself to a psychiatric ward on more than one occasion; this book hit me hard. It was triggering for me, I just felt it deep in my soul. I cried twice while reading this. It's definitely worth a read but keep in mind that for some people this might be a very touchy subject for some people.

Brutally honest and vivid account of life under the weight of mental illness. May be triggering for those who still suffer, yet infused with cautious hope. I highly recommend this book.
