I was close to DNF’ing this for the first 25%, I just wasn’t getting into it and found some of the language confusing…then I’m not sure what happened but I found the rhythm of the book!

So I ended up rather liking it 🤪

In this world with no magic, professional Illusionists reign supreme, but it’s a field dominated by men as women attempting the profession are found guilty of practicing witchcraft and subsequently hunted down to be executed. This leads us to the story of Ash on her journey to Queen’s Day for the opportunity to compete for the seal of approval that would grant her the ability to safely work as a professional Illusionist.

The story is a slow build-up as it’s Ash vs. the clock, constantly utilizing her experience as an escape artist to duck the witch hunt against her. The perspective jumps from Ash every once in a while to Ren, a competing Illusionist and big fan of Ash’s, and a religious zealot named Odell.

Broken between glimpses into various illusionists’ acts in the days leading up to Queen’s Day, we get these lovely and wholesome moments between Ash and Ren. He’s smitten from the moment he sees her and is not only determined to get closer to her, but also help provide her the opportunity to compete against him fairly and without obstacles.

This was a well-needed read while I was resting. Overall, very cozy with just enough drama to keep me engaged.

CW: sexism + misogyny, murder, recurring mentions of torture, recurring mentions of dead/murdered loved ones, grief, religious extremism + weaponized religion, brief violence

Amazing! The Unflinching Ash captivated me from the start! It’s a fantasy with magicians and tricks and illusions. In a male dominated world, Ash chose the path of being a Mystic despite the risk of being labeled a witch and being tried and executed. She wants to pave the way for women to be what they want to be and to share equal rights with men. So yes, this book is very feminist and I loved it! Ash is an amazing character, she’s bold and fearless and literally won’t let anything stand in her way of reaching her goals. I also loved Ren who is sweet and willing to stand by and let Ash do her thing. The slow burn romance was lovely and the pace of the story was just right. I stayed up late to finish this one because I couldn’t put it down! There are some very tense moments that will have you on the edge of your seat. I seriously can’t recommend this book enough!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Very unique story

This book was a group read for my book club, and I knew nothing about it going in. The writing style in this book is something I have never encountered before. It took a bit to understand the world they live in and to decipher the dialect. I normally don’t read stories without spice, so if that’s what you’re looking for this book is not for you. I did enjoy this story though, and it’s one I can’t even compare to another of its style.
