This fifth instalment was super well-structured and wonderfully paced. It was a fantastic execution of a fab premise - time loops AND a mystery? And the story ends up discussing the ethical ramifications of a time loop, how your morality can decay if there are no consequences for your actions. I just loved reading this!

One of the stand-out qualities of the book was the character development of the three MCs. We get proper looks at each of their backstories, and then we get to see them develop in relation to these. I especially loved the backstories as they gave such clear insight into why Merle, Taako, and Magnus are the way that they are. In relation to this, I liked how climax was less about a battle scene/high adrenaline scenario, and more about the MCs confronting themselves. Thus is was focussed on an emotional, character-driven threat than a physical one, which was refreshing and suited the story well.

I also adored the found family element of this book. The little chatty, bantery moments were aplenty between the MCs which brought this trope to life.

Something I’ve struggled with in previous instalments is the art style - it can be highly detailed which I ironically find harder to read. But I didn’t have any issue here!

Full book: Ugh, I can’t handle all the feels in these books! So emotional and I love them so so so much. Pietsch and the McElroys knocked it out of the park AGAIN. The art is incredible, and they capture the essence of the podcast while modifying it enough to translate super well into a graphic novel format. I can’t WAIT for The Suffering Game, one of my all time favorite arcs (Petals to the Metal is my other favorite). Will definitely reread it after I reread the first 4.

ARC: Read the sampler from Net Galley and it was very good! I can’t wait to read the whole thing. I remember this arc of the podcast blew my mind. My one complaint about the galley was it was hard to read some of the drawn-in text.
