azzarello doesnt understand constantine as a person and was still heavily afflicted with the grimdarkness of 90s comics in this volume. so he ends up writing johnny as this complete fucking asshole instead of the kind of awful but genuinely caring bastard that he'd been for like 15 years of writing before this garbage. even the fucking art mischaracterizes him. he looked more like the damn joker than john constantine. also, its racist. which isnt exactly *new* for hellblazer considering it started in the 80s, but i dont remember it ever getting quite as egregious as this.

Edgy shit makes you think you look mature, but instead it's making you look like a child.

By far the worst Hellblazer writing so far.

Great stories. So happy to see Steve Dillon return - I adore him as an illustrator. But HOLY HELL whomever illustrated the prison stories... YUCK. I detested the style. They all looked like dwarvish oompah loompahs. Hated it utterly. IMHO one of the worst things about the Hellblazer series is some of the illustrators chosen. The art is good! But it can really destroy the immersion when it changes so jarringly.

Right, I’ve just been reminded how little I care for the majority of Azzarello’s work.

Felt more like an Azzarrello story than a Constantine story, but some of the art was cool and I liked that he brought back his old punk days.
