Herbert is the British Dean Koontz. This one is just awful, even by his low standards.

I feel like I’ve wasted so much time trying to finish this book. So finally after getting though the first 2 parts, I gave up. It’s terrible. Waste of time.

The first half of this book was very interesting. Especially the main characters scientific view regarding paranormal events and apparitions. Sadly, it got gory very fast. A neverending streak of grusome murders and suicides as "the dark" spreads over London. I got desensitized after reading so many muders back to back. There was ingenuity behind the sadistic way everybody died and I acknowledge the horror of the later chapters but even so, I lost interest when I read them.
I personally enjoyed the protagonists attempts to elucidate past events and explain the paranormal entity.
The writing style is excellent, the rapid pacing works but the number of murders and constant threats is ridiculously high.
The book could have been shorter. I found it a bit repetitive but it is worth reading.
