It's hard to rate this book because I am not a fan of short stories. I never feel that I connect with them and can rarely remember what I've read. The first two stories, "The Southern Thruway" and "The Health of the Sick", were really good. I especially liked "The Health of the Sick," a story about a family trying to keep the death of a son from the sick mother. The final stories didn't do it for me at all and a couple, after I'd finished, I wondered what I'd just read. The one exception was "Nurse Cora," but that story changed voices so frequently between four characters, and often in the middle of a paragraph, that it felt choppy.

Este libro en general fue una decepción porque los primeros dos cuentos fueron excelentes y después puff :(

Standouts: “La autopista del sur,” “The Island at Noon,” “The Health of the Sick,” “Nurse Cora” — also, the destructive Rivette vibes of “John Howell” and “Todos Los Fuegos el Fuego.”

I enjoyed the first few stories in the beginning of the collection, but once I read Nurse Cora, I started to hate everything.
