This was an exceptionally hard read; the story is gruesome and left me feeling angry, and a lot of grief. It follows a legendary Jamaican slave revolt, and sheds a light on the true nature of slavery in the West Indies. Marlon James tells a story of the struggle for liberation as a Jamaican man himself, using the native language and incorporating geographical and cultural references.
This is a book that should be read if one is looking into West Indian history, as it references other revolts in other slave holding island colonies.

wow. this is an incredible (and difficult) read. as a history buff, this novel hits all the right stuff with regards to the nuances of Caribbean plantation life, but also gives it that human, feet-on-the-ground perspective that is missing from most history books.

not a light read at all, but probably one of the best.

The plot is good and interesting. It seesaws between boring and exciting. The dialect can be a little hard to pick up especially if you are totally unfamiliar with it, (it wasn't hard for me to understand) but I think once you get going it becomes easier. The only thing that would have made this book a 5/5 for me would be if the language wasn't so crass. Sexual violence and assault is described in (in my opinion) unnecessary detail and without any respect or care for the victim(s) or reader. If you are triggered by sexual assault or violence I strongly advise that you do not read this book.
