So technically I read some of these issues out of order so I knew what to expect, but reading through the brilliant mind that is Donny Cates is probably one of the greatest comic book experiences I've had. Prior to hearing about Cates' run on Venom, I knew very little about the character. I had some basic knowledge, but what we get in this first issue is the complexity of this character and a very interesting symbiote origin story.

As this issue opens, readers see Cates battling with his symbiote. They have become more aggressive, more unstable which isn't what Cates is used to. Through each panel, Cates provides readers with more and more understanding about the symbiote and what or who may be communicating with Brock's symbiote in a way that is causing him to transform into a lethal creature. There is some conversation about the symbiote and it's relationshipt to the military also leading Brock to an understanding that his symbiote isn't the only one that has infiltrated Earth. This is a heck of a beginning to a new series. I can only imagine what readers were feeling as they read this series issue by issue as it was released to readers. Stegman does a hell of the job with art. As I've been reading more and more Venom, it is clear that the dark and gritty artwork fits both the storyline and the character and I couldn't imagine it any other way. It draws the reader into the story in unexpected and new ways.

If you are considering reading some Venom comics I would definitely recommend checking out this run.
