A really moving debut collection of poetry. The voice throughout the collection is really bold and carries the weight of so much experience and emotion.

I'll be the first to admit I know very little about poetry, but as a layman reader this was a fascinating collection to dive into. The book is divided into the five stages of grief, and those emotions suffuse the writing.

My favourite poem was 'Waking Up at Night' which included these lines:
Your heart is broken,
I know.
But what is the point of having
one if the world isn't able to break it.

The language is so evocative, Bargaining describes a train crowded full of people where 'everyone is gifted/ with the pain/ of not belonging.'

I really enjoyed reading the whole collection, it challenged me, and I look forward to reading more of Magan's work in the future.

Full disclosure, I met Magan through a project I managed at Melbourne Writers Festival, and he sent me a copy of the collection to read.
