the writing is strange. the dialogue is stilted, and Anita talks to the same characters multiple times without ever getting their names. the shopkeeper, the sister. sometimes the way people reacted was super bizarre to a point of being unbelievable. imagine, you've just been mugged, and someone who sees that you are disheveled and in pain starts telling you about a parade they'd like to go see. just weird. but I liked the setting and the descriptions of the food, and I wanted to like Anita (she is kind and appreciates kindness in others). I have the second book on my to-read list; if it's super weird, I will have had enough.
