***3.5*** Decent start to the series. Very fast pace, maybe too fast...? Felt a little like I was jumping in mid-stream at times.

Vampires are evil. Elves are wise-cracking and sexy. Maggie is a kick-a heroine who can open portals between earth and the fae realm enabling her career as a bounty-hunter for rogue supernaturals hiding out on earth. And, or course she saves earth from a vampire apocalypse. All good pnr/uf material, but nothing that hasn't been done before. Mostly I kept thinking Rachel Morgan and the Hollows did it better. But then, I've always found demons more interesting than elves.

Soooooo... you have to really suspend belief for this urban fantasy. It's definitely a fast-paced light read. It was the right book at the right time for me, and I found that once I got into it, I didn't want to put it down. I also liked Danley's book the woodcutter.

Cute read

Enjoyed this book. Easy ready and another take on the paranormal. Loved the humor of the author. MSU continue series later.

I enjoyed this. It was a light, fun romp through a new world for me, since I've never read anything by this author before. Good read for a rainy day, lots of action and fights, but no romance. If you're looking for steamy scenes, look elsewhere. If you just want a fun little mystery to pass the time with, check this out. The magic world and the real one are separate, with only portals providing access from one side to the other. Except for our protagonist, who can break the rules. I absolutely loved that the way she gets to The Other Side (and yes I did hear that song in my head every single time I read those words) was to run her car right off a cliff. Love love love that. And I really would like to find my own little Brownie. Read it, you'll see why.

I was excited to read this and bought the complete series because of all the high reviews. After reading this first book I'm left feeling a little disappointed. What gives this story 4 stars, to me, is the world building, I think, and the fact that I read through it in less than a day so it was obviously interesting enough to hold my attention. It's an intriguing premise to have two worlds side by side like that with monitored portals. However; I was often confused as to who the author's audience was supposed to be. The book read like a children's book at times with its simple characters and, sometimes clunky, convenient plot. SPOILER!! (Is there really anyone who did not know, right away, that the dad was still alive somewhere?) In all honesty, it sometimes felt obvious that the author was going down a checklist of everything that should be in a good story. Sarcastic heroine? Check. Dramatic mother? Check. Gorgeous, sexy male partner? Check. Evil "bad guy"? Check. Exciting twist? Check. But the cussing and violence etc. make it obvious that these were intended for adult reading.
Some of the dialogue came across as forced, like the author was trying too hard to be funny, and it would pull me out of the story. Also, Maggie is interesting enough that I think I could grow to really like her but the author didn't give me enough substance to make me care for any of the other characters. Everything just seemed to happen so fast that there wasn't time for much character development. SPOILER!! Finally, I don't really understand how she got rid of her uncle "forever" by doing the same thing to him that had happened to her dad (who returned). Okay, so I just realized that all the negative comments make it seem like I hated the book but I actually did like it. I'm going to read the second book right away because I'm hoping things will get better as I go along.

3 1/2 stars. It was a decent tale, but I'm not sure it interested me enough to read further in the series.

Really enjoyed it. The setting, the story and the action. Excellent characterization, essentially a paranormal detective story done right. The star lost is for the somewhat fuzzy explanation about the abilities used. I'm hoping it will be explained in the latter books. Highly recommend

Really nice start to a lovely series.

I was really quite impressed with her skills. I don't feel like theres a romance going on between Killian and her more a really cool friendship. I'm not keen on anything else between them.
