Aw, what a wonderful book!
Hubert Bird is an elderly gentleman who lives alone. He has turned his back on people and the outside world. So when his daughter informs him that she's coming all the way from Australia to visit him, Hubert faces a race against time to make his real life resemble the fake life he has been portraying to his daughter.
This story has so much heart, so much sorrow, and so much joy!
The sense of family and community is just bursting with love β€οΈ
π₯° Wonderful Characters
β¨οΈ A lesson for us all
π‘ Care for your neighbour
β€οΈ Love, Hope, Joy
π Heart ache
β οΈ Mention of drug abuse
A little quote I loved "Even the longest journey starts with a single step."
(So true in many aspects of life!)
I would highly recommend this book!

I would have given this book an extra star if not for the ending. Where in the world did THAT come from?

This book had me honestly holding back tears. This is so beautifully written and this story will definitely stay with me, exploring themes such as loneliness and grief yet is heartwarming to its core.

Much of this book was 5-star and I loved the character of Hubert Bird. I just did not like the ending, which felt tacked-on and didn't flow with the rest of the book. But definitely a must-read for the fans of Ove...another loveable curmudgeon!

Group of lonely misfits turned found family waged war against loneliness and Hubert Bird comes to grips with his past. I really enjoyed the beginning half of the book, but the ending fell a little flat for me. The main conflict of the book was not exactly resolved, it was sort of dissolved, which meant there was no payoff for the tension, which didnβt work for me.
Graphic: Grief and Racism
Moderate: Addiction, Classism, Drug abuse, Drug use, Dementia, Death, and Death of parent
Minor: Fatphobia
