tbh i just grabbed this book at the library because the cover looked cool + the little summary blurb seemed interesting.

i thought the book’s concept was cool (lowkey gave me eternal sunshine of the spotless mind vibes with the metaphysical acupuncturist + some other SMALL elements in the book. like i wish they did more world building with the weird shit because i LOVE weird shit) but god DAMN i could not STAND any of the characters.

all the characters in this book are super pretentious and like “quirky” for quirkinesses’ sake imo?? (like of cOURSE THE MAIN FEMALE PROTAGONIST IS A FUCKIN LIBRARIAN THAT WEARS THE SAME RED LIPSTICK EVERY DAY LMAO) it really was hard for me to give a shit about the characters in this book lol. but also maybe im on a hate train for whiny millennial protagonists idkidk?? like can we stop writing books where the main pick-me-girl protagonist has some “quirky” job but can also magically afford a 3 bedroom apartment in new york??? im really fuckin tired of that shit????? ANYWAYS i feel like a lot of the book was spent whining about how the characters have unfulfilling relationships, so that got kind of repetitive after a while :/

the overall story was meh. nothing spectacular.

i saw one review saying this book was a giant waste of time but tbh this book was more of a quick distraction. kind of like a dumb commercial.

i give it like 2.5 stars. rounding to 3 tho cuz i liked a few of the weird “world building-ish” elements.

- this was So Bad
- I wish I could emphasize just how bad
- it was trying to be philosophical but just failed at it im sorry
- I had certain expectations of where I thought this was going but it took a complete turn and not in the good way
- the book cover and title is too good to be wasted on this type of story ughhhhh I literally just read it bc of them
- the sexual stuff was too much there was literally no escape and it felt so crude?? Idk I hated it
- the reviews all make sense now loooool
- a particular quote that made me want to die: "time wasn't eating your pussy with its barbed tongue" just typing that out made me want to kms
- glad it was short I don't think I'd have survived more pages than this

I really enjoyed this weird, existentialist book about love, sex, and death. In it, a man dies, then awakens after a sort of bureaucratic error. Later, a woman falls in love with the man, who is already dead. The switch between perspectives was between very dissonant voices and in fact separate stories, which helped to heighten the sort of anxious incorporeality of the novel. I think it would make a pretty bad movie, but I hope someone makes it into a movie anyway because it would be my favorite kind, and would slot perfectly into a film series/collection I have about the fear of death.

Weird. Not my usual type of book. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Most of all I can’t believe this book was published in 2020. It feels so firmly set in ~2011.
Idk, I liked the premise but in execution it felt immature. Nothing can happen without a character finding it “strangely arousing”. There’s sex on every other page, but it’s not exciting in any way. The relationships and characters are all toxic and awful, but the cutesy, twee way they’re described makes you wonder if the author knows that.

I really liked it, I just don't know how to describe it. It's very well written, and transports you into an alternate reality that kind of rattles your core.

I have complicated feelings about this book. Like, it's interesting and definitely not something that's been done before. . . I appreciate the ideas but there is just maybe a little too much weird? I felt strange reading it and even typing this review, I can feel my face scrunching up because it's just strange. I don't recommend it, but I didn't hate it, either?
