There’s no doubt that Amy Bonnaffons can write; on a prose level, this is a lovely book. It also has an intriguing setup: Thomas is erroneously visited by an angel of death when he’s a boy, which somehow messes with his actual death years later. He finds himself in a liminal state, dead but embodied and back in the world for a short time. He meets Rachel, who is alive, and against the rules Thomas has been given, they begin an ill-fated relationship. And then, after things have gone awry, here comes Mark, an ex of Rachel’s from several years prior.
I guess the thing keeping this from rating higher on my personal scale is the fact that I just didn’t care about any of these people. They weren’t real enough for me to feel invested in what happened to them—and that’s a crucial element in my connection to a book and enjoyment of a reading experience. I don’t need likable, but I do need to care. This one just left me feeling a bit cold.

An interesting and beautifully written book that leaves you feeling empty with a lot of unresolved questions.
Perfect ghostmance lol might be 5 stars on a reread cant decide
An odd little book about ghosts and relationships. Entertaining and well written (some pretty sentences and interesting ideas) but wouldn’t read again. Left with no real meaningful takeaway, except perhaps the importance of dating a partner who is “real”
Forced my way to 19% before DNFing this. Bad bad not good (in my opinion), disappointing as it took a direction that I wasn’t expecting and really didn’t enjoy. Some parts are beautifully written but the majority had me cringing.

dropped from a 3.5 to 2.75,,,, as I went on. Honestly like a less pleasant/enjoyable One Last Stop by CMQ.
prose was...patting itself on the back for being good a little too much. time jumps, side characters doing a LOT of heavy lifting. i can't put my finger on it. something like. a mysterious pressure, a jealous presence makes me dislike this unfortunately
