“Babylon Revisited” is a tiny book containing short stories revolving around loss. In this book, there are 3 short stories - “Babylon Revisited”, “The Cut Glass Bowl” and “The Lost Decade.” The first is about a father, after making countless mistakes, trying to redeem himself for his daughter. The second is about a woman, who had once never had any other worry than suitors, finding herself sinking deeper and deeper into the misery of an unsatisfying life. The third is about an alcoholic who missed out on 10 years of his life due to his addiction. In typical Fitzgerald fashion, there is a sense of melancholy and regret in each of the stories which I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed the insight into American life in the 1930s. Fitzgerald has a way to illustrate the mundane in a very sad and painful way. I enjoyed this collection of short stories, but I think it was just missing that extra something to make me really love it. Despite the descriptive writing and the demonstration of very unfortunate events, I still felt a certain distance that I don’t really know how to explain. Even so, I still recommend it as it is still very well written and it is, I think, very representative of Fitzgerald’s style.
