I decided to participate in the One eRead Canada book read and I thoroughly enjoyed this short autobiographical novel of the author's escape from Vietnam to starting a new life in Canada. It took me a few starts and stops to get into the cadence but once I did, I found it flowed. Ms. Thúy's narration of her own story gave it a special feel and I could hear her smiling as she read some of the passages. A quick listen (3 hours) with short indistinguishable chapters I liked this book. It doesn't tell the entire story of the Vietnamese people's struggles to escape and start anew in another country but it does give a glimpse into what would have been a horrifying experience.

A really beautiful, reflective book about the life of a woman finding herself after escaping war as a child and grappling with the family pressures that come with living in diaspora. The writing and detail is woven so gorgeously that I wish I could see the world and people through Vi's eyes more often
