The Summerlark Elf is a great example of how genre fiction doesn't need complicated plots or intricate world building to be enjoyable. A well told and fun story can be satisfying and well worth the time spent. This book was just shy of 4 stars for me. I would probably put it around a solid 3.75. It was reminiscent of Dragonlance-esque stories from my youth, with a unique cast of characters working together to overcome a series of obstacles. If you are looking for a quick, fun read in between 900 page epics, this is the book for you.

This is a nice "feel-good", easy to read fantasy.
It is rather short and as such makes a nice break between the big tomes.

I found the book to be a bit - naive - for lack of a better word. People are turned from totally stupid to good guy within a few pages, and the good guys find and like each other in just a moment or two and end up best friends just like that. And they also forgive each other in a matter of seconds for any wrongdoings... Things like hiding someone, but sending out letters to their parents via guard on a daily basis doesn't seem to be the wisest thing to do either, but here we go... Those really were a bit annoying at times. Some of the dialogue did feel quite stilted, and the "noble" way of talking of some of the characters didn't feel too real to me.

On the other hand if one wants a break from all the grimdark, bloody and complex books, this might be just the right fit! It is quite upbeat and an entertaining read.

A fun, old-school D&D adventure, with plenty of twists, wonderful character chemistry, and witty dialog.

"An elf with a mysterious background? Check.
A Halfling with a less than reputable profession? Check.
A half-elf with parental issues? Check
A dwarf with a pickaxe? Check
All of them coming together to form an adventuring party? CHECK!"
