Wowza!! Nonstop action, commentary on race relations, revenge for past treatment and magic. Gripping!

This is heavy on action but light on character development. The concept is cool--be sure to check out the essays at the end (at least if you happen upon the Hoopla edition)--but there's been a lot of media recently centered around similar themes/events (the new HBO Watchmen, P. Djeli Clark's [b: Ring Shout|49247242|Ring Shout|P. Really like the premise and the characters are interesting so far. Excited for the next one

I have mixed feelings about this.
the premise is what made me check it out: hate (racism) is a poison turning people into demons- the main family uses old fashion fighting and potions to stop it. The art style is dynamic, busy, full.

But this falls into the category of comics (with Saga and On a Sunbeam) that don't quite do it for me narratively. I'm glad this exists in the world but it might not be my aesthetic cup of tea? I have volumes 2 and 3 checked out, but unsure if I'm going to continue.

I adore this series. Between the masterful story telling, engaging characters, and lovely art it's just a story that works 100%. I'll happily continue with this series

Fantastic and innovative! It's easy to see why this won an Eisner. Would make a great TV series too.
