This challenged me to be empathetic towards characters that I did not like. I was overdue for a challenge.

This book is OK, I just didn't connect with it. The main character is a male stand-up comedian which is a questionable occupation at best. Early in the book he is on stage and makes a "joke" about a cat being raped by a dog. So, that left a bad taste, and the book just didn't get past this fumble; in fact there are other crude parts. Later he goes on to cheat on his wife and feel guilty about it (yawn).

The better parts of the book are about his close relationship with his sister, who is dying. She is an artist who loves a particular sculpture of a dancing woman, titled Mad with Joy.
