Admito que compré este libro hace ya como dos años porque me lo recomendaban mucho. Pero, cuando intenté leerlo en 2017, mis prejuicios fueron más fuertes que yo y terminé por abandonar al tercer capítulo.
-La contratapa me hacía pensar que este libro era uno de esos romances adolescentes de “me enamoré del chico malo” (nada que ver).
-El primer capítulo tenía demasiados gerundios para mi gusto (cosas de correctora obsesiva).
-La protagonista no me gustó ni un poco en el primer vistazo.
-La presentación del personaje masculino coprotagonista se me hizo demasiado cliché como para mis estándares (y eso que en general las ideas cliché no me molestan).
Sin embargo, decidí darle otra oportunidad porque muchos bloggers igual de exigentes (o más) que yo estaban reseñando hace poco el tercer libro de la saga con un puntaje mucho más alto de lo que hubiera esperado; decían que los libros iban cada vez mejor. Que el primero tenía sus cosas negativas, pero que el segundo lo superaba y el tercero era excelente.
Me sorprendió cuánto lo disfruté. Hubo algunos detalles técnicos que no me gustaron ni un poco y otros asuntos con los que tuve contradicciones; pero no me detendré a hablar de ello acá en Goodreads.
Lo que vale es que, en líneas generales, el libro me encantó. Fue una novela que no pude soltar.
El misterio se mantiene prácticamente hasta el final y las sospechas del lector pasan de un posible culpable al otro sin seguridad real todo el tiempo. Es excelente en este aspecto.
Las escenas gore están narradas sin ningún tapujo, se describen los modos de asesinato de cada víctima con suficiente detalle (sin ser tediosos). El libro NO ES para lectores de estómago sensible.
Me gustó mucho notar un amplio conocimiento de medicina y anatomía por parte de la autora, además de la investigación histórica realizada. Al final del libro, de hecho, hay un apartado que explica las pequeñas diferencias y licencias tomadas en comparación con el caso real de Jack el destripador. Es muy interesante ver comentarios del estilo: “Se ve un carruaje en tal calle, pero en esa época era un lugar demasiado angosto para que esto fuese posible; la ampliación de la calle se realizó 4 décadas después del momento en el que transcurre la novela”. Y cosas así, licencias que van más allá de la historia en sí y hablan de un conocimiento exhaustivo incluso del paisaje histórico de la novela. Me pareció algo fantástico.
Es un libro complicado de reseñar. Tiene varias cosas que no me gustaron y varias otras que me encantaron. Darle un puntaje me resultó difícil.
Cuando puse el libro en una balanza imaginaria llegué a la conclusión de que, con quejas y todo, lo disfruté mucho y me dejó con ganas de más. Y eso es lo que vale.

Hmmm, I’m not entirely sure how to review this book. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was AMAZING. I liked this book overall and will likely move to the next ones in the series. However, some of the plot felt a little…simple(?) to me. I don’t know how to put it into words, but it felt a little depthless, either in character development or character dialogue. Overall, I did like the strong female MC. I think I just needed more meat to the story - more intrigue so that the discovery felt a little more drawn out.

The three stars is because I really, really love the idea and premise for the story and feel like two stars is too harsh.
But I got issues with this.
I heard on some video essay about Zach Snyder and the DC movie universe, that Snyder focused on just moments, brilliantly shot cinematic moments, but there were no scenes developed and threaded through the film. That's what this felt like to me. Moments that were interesting, but a lot of gaps on the emotional and logical level. The story felt disjointed to me and I wasn't as invested as I wanted to be with the characters (less on the romance). There was a lot of tell (through our MC's thoughts), not show and her conclusion-jumping felt really forced in places. It's like the research on history and science was very well done, the plot mostly there, but there was not the same attention to creating understandable characters and relationships. Being an author is hard to have all of that running smoothly.
I read this because I want to read the sequel (DRACULA, COME ON!!), and figured I needed this one first. If it wasn't about Prince Dracula, I wouldn't continue with this series. I rolled my eyes far too often.
I'm hoping this is just first author mistakes and Maniscalco improves with the next. Because again, the premises and ideas of this series are fabulous.
(Also, I felt like the gore was unnecessary. Like, was I supposed to be grossed out? Shock is one thing, but use it sparingly so it doesn't just make me want to skim.)
