*spoilers!*
The Vigilante
This was my least favorite of the collection. It is hard to read about violence in general, let alone mob violence, but reading about racially motivated mob violence is just painful. Is this a very Steinbeck story? Yes. But I would not reread it.
The Snake
I actually really enjoyed this. The setting of a lab is fairly original, and this line between animal cruelty for science vs. animal cruelty for sport is an interesting moral debate. The descriptions of the woman and her actions were particularly engaging, I think. The ending is open to interpretation, but there is a sense of torture in it.
The Chrysanyhemums
I thought the man was going to kill her, tbh. I kind of figured the chrysanthemums were a ruse, but I thought that the pans would be too and that he would just knock her out with it... Glad to see that was not the case, of course, but also her realization of strength and the further loss of it after seeing the tossed shoots was heartbreaking to me... Why is it so bad to be feminine again? To be a strong feminine woman?
