Graphic violence, strong plot, good characters

I love the anthropological bent of the detection. I am generally not a fan of 'on-screen' sex & detailed violence, but it does fit with the writing style and tone of this book. I will try the next one, hoping there will be less chunks I have to skip!

I love forensic anthropology books but not this one. I don't like the main character enough to read another book in the series. The plot was too hokey for me.

This was a fairly interesting start to a series that I do want to explore further, about an anthropologist turned detective. There were some things about this book that I didn’t like — Gideon himself was rather annoying at times and very sexist & “macho” when it wasn’t necessary — but I did enjoy the twistyturny nature of the mystery and also how nerdy Gideon was at times. I grew up as the child of a professor and spent a lot of time around other professors and I can confirm that professors can (& do) refer back to their specialty area a LOT in casual conversations. So that aspect of Gideon’s personality made sense to me, including his compliments to his girlfriend(?) about her subcutaneous adipose deposits. Nerds, all of them…!

Meh. First in a series so maybe it gets better, but I didn’t become attached to the protagonist. A couple of f-bombs and mild sex.

Casual racism. I couldn’t tell if this character is just an ass or if it’s acceptable but it made me want to stop reading and read actual good books

I'm a big fan of the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs, and I felt like Gideon Oliver was really the pre-cursor to "Bones" so I was excited to read this! It's also one of my dad's favorite series, so double excitement. I enjoyed the story, but I felt like it started too quickly--I spent most of the book feeling like I missed something. I think it was just an attempt to make the excitement begin on page one, and it certainly did, but without a little bit more lead-up, I felt sort of lost and never was able to shake that feeling. I'm looking forward to reading another--now that I've got a better idea about Gideon the character, some of that introductory stuff will be out of the way and we can really just zip right into it.
