I found The Value of Nothing to be incredibly valuable 😜. The way it approached economics was interesting, and I really liked the focus on the social and political implications of free market capitalism. I was surprised while reading that this was published in 2009, as I think it is all the more relevant now.

i got to this book a bit late, so at times I was wondering how more recent events measured up to what was being described, critiqued, praised. but that is my fault for finding the book 10+ years after it was published. it was a slim book, and pretty clearly and well laid out. at times i felt it was wandering a bit or speaking in a way that wasn't fully accessible to me (i don't have a background in economics or political science). but generally the examples of concepts were interesting (and often new to me) and well chosen. i especially appreciated the second part of the book that tried to show examples and concepts of how we could reimagine or do things a different way. it spoke to the things i have felt but didn't have good examples or inspiration to draw from.

Amazing and inspiring. A completely different view about what laissez faire means for our modern world economy (hint: nothing). Raj Patel is visiting my school in two weeks and I am so glad I took the time to read his book.

Super interesting. Definitely more interested in the second part of the book where he offers alternatives to our current market economy. Though would have liked more detail. I get the sense he covers more of that in his first book.

The first half of the book was a modern history of economics which I'm glad I read because you need the context.

It wasn't quite what I expected, but has certainly left me thinking about a lot of things. Am curious how to get from the thinking to action, though. Expected a little more on this - but not in the book.

An important book. Must read, especially for a market lover like myself.
