This book (and the whole series) is information-dense, so go in with your thinking caps on! There's a really unique magic system, questions of inheritance, mystery, political intrigue and unrest, examinations of class, environmental impacts of human behavior, and more. I'm really glad I was able to read all 3 books back-to-back because I don't know if I could have retained all the important information if I had to wait between books.

Author is clearly a developing author and the plot is rather predictable but the world building is well done and the characters are easy to root for

A very fun fantasy read! It reminded me a lot of reading Black Sun. All of the characters were great, especially Mephi! The island world was great, and Lin dealing with her dad’s boneshard magic and experiments was compelling. I did kind of wish the three characters who were barely featured had more POV chapters, because I kept forgetting about them.
