The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles is the very definition of quiet beauty. It's not a book that will make you shout in glee at its cleverness or snap your fingers at the discovery of an aha! moment. Instead, it will be a book that lingers, like that of a fine wine. For that reason, this is one of those picture books that will perhaps appeal to adults more than kids, but I'll have to see if that prediction rings true after I read it to a group of students.

This is a beautiful story with understated illustrations. The main character uncorks bottles the sea delivers to him on the beach and he finds who the letter is for, no matter how hard it is. But one day, he gets a letter that he doesn’t know who to deliver to. He asks everyone in the village. The message says to gather at the beach for a party that evening. When he can’t find the recipient, the man decides to set up for the party anyway. Everyone from the town shows up and a party ensues with a good time. At the end, the man decides he might have been the recipient after all. Maybe, he thinks he will deliver the letter again tomorrow. It’s a warm fuzzy kind of book.
It does seem to be more adult in tone. That’s why I bought it for my collection of picture books.

Whimsical and somewhat melancholic. This is the story of a fisherman, who fishes for messages in bottles instead of fish. He delivers them to their intended recipients. But it's lonely delivering messages and never receiving them, until somebody sends him a message.
I like the message of this book, and that it's subtle.
The art is lovely and atmospheric. It matches the tone of the story perfectly.

Oh my gosh, I loved this book! The writing is beautiful accompanied with gorgeous illustrations. The Uncorker of ocean bottles makes sure that messages go to the correct loved one. The one thing he would love is a message of his own. One day he finds a message with no name and starts to search around the village to see who it belongs to. Parents: warning you may get a tear in your eye. (Ages 4-6)
