What starts as folk horror later shifts toward something else. The first two thirds were compelling enough, but it is the third act where thing kick into gear and elevates the story.

I liked the book. Now that's out of the way, I have one complaint - either the paper was too thin or the ink too strong, either way, I could see the words on the back-side of the pages and the next page through the page I was reading, making it difficult to read.

I am not sure what to think about this book. I really enjoyed it at the beginning. As the story progressed, I felt like there was a lot of disconnect between what I was expecting to happen and the events that unfolded... Maybe that's on me? But when the story finished, I still had all of the questions I had at the beginning of the book. I wanted to learn more about the religion, the snakes, the book about the Great Worm... The only reason I finished this book was because I was hoping that it would have answered some of the questions I had. It didn't.

2/3 of it was really good and then it just took a turn that did not work for me.

A lot of repetition. Story could’ve been told in far fewer pages. The themes presented weren’t really my thing.

Really not what I expected this to be. Honestly, the story took a very strange turn and there were so many different points of view that were difficult to follow that I found myself feeling as if I skipped sections of the book. After looking back through I realized that I had not and we were switching narrators. I was not scared by this book, and I just wasn't into all the strange sexual elements that were brought in.

This book was just not for me, which is disappointing because I've heard so many good things about it! First let me say that I enjoyed the prose and I really liked the monster/demon worms in the book; They were gross and scary.

Here are the things that didnt work for me: I didn't connect with the characters. I was expecting a snake cult book with glossolalia. The setup for the story was a snake cult, but then it evolved into something much greater and unexpected. The book had nothing much to do with the snake cult. This is probably just an issue with how the book is sold in the synopsis and its effect on my expectations for the book. The prose were good, with the exception of one bit of repetitive imagery: blood in and on the lips/mouth. It got distracting after a while and pulled me out of the story.

Maybe these things wont bother you as they did me, so give it a try if you want to read about an apocalyptic scenario with worm demons that live beneath us.
