This was a rather interesting read for me. I never heard anything of Lost Colony of Roanoke or some of the Native American myths used in this book. So, I couldn’t tell you how much of that is true to the myths or not, but regardless I found it semi unique compared to some of the urban fantasies out there.

I loved this one. I love books about paranormal specially ones that are so well written. The character development is great, her world building is wonderful and the story line moves along well and is believable.
There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns in this book. This book pulled me in and kept my attention. I didn't want to put it down for any reason. And then the horrible thing happened, I read the last word, and now I must grab the other books in the series there is no other choice for me.
So, if you love a really well written book and you love paranormal then I would grab this one.

This book had me going up and down... not really in a good way. It was slow to start then would pick up some, then slow again. It started getting interesting about chapter 16. I felt both characters were really juvenile the beginning. Both characters were very stubborn about admitting anything. Once they finally gave in and starting trusting each other was when the book started getting interesting. I'm not sure if I will read the second book or not.

So The Curse Keepers is basically about how the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the North Carolina settlement, has mysteriously vanished in 1590. This is all due to a curse, formed by two men (and only the descendants of their families really know what happened to that colony), and of course like all curses--they can be broken, but only if a descendent from those two men meet up in the town where it all happened. If the curse is broken, then the spirits will be unleased and seek their revenge. So if you're with me, right now, one would think this book would be really interesting. It was meh.
So at the beginning you meet Ellie, who does not believe a single story her father ever told her about the curse, and she's working at a dinner when a mysterious boy (man?) walks in, aka Mr. Hottie according to the other employee. From this moment, Ellie can't breath...literally and from her POV it looks like the guy can't either (so you're like, "oh hey, that must be the other descendant"). Then it goes all downhill from there. At first glance, I didn't really have a problem with Ellie but I hated the guy that she was dating, Dwight (aka Dweeb) was such a tool, but then reading more into the book I just got frustrated with her. Surprisingly, her character is like super horny and that seems like all the time, and at points in the book she just seemed dumbed down (could just be my perception thought).
Now onto Collin, basically a grade A asshat...or douchebag (whichever you'd like), I didn't really like his character either. So they meet, the curse is broken, and they have 7 days (basically 6 nights) to fix what they messed up. And then again, it went all downhill, due to not liking either character I just didn't care about their adventure, sex life, or if they actually did correct the curse by the morning of the 7th day. I really wish I did like the book but I guess I'll have to do more research of the books that kindle unlimited recommends.

Great start to a new series for me! I love Swank’s other work and have dragged my feet when it comes to this series because of the fantasy aspect but I was WRONG! I loved it, Ellie is a reluctant heroine who has been told she is part of the key to unlocking the gate to hell. Colin is the other half of the key and has been anxiously waiting his whole like to take up the responsibility passed down to him. Their connection is out of this world (ha) and the beginning of their journey is so captivating you won’t be able to put it down. Get ready to fall in love with a new series!

I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

This is one of those books that gave me a physical reaction around the end. The only reason I gave it 4.5 stars instead of 5 is because of how slowly it started off. I was annoyed with Ellie and Collin at first. Ellie's blatant refusal to believe in the curse was annoying at first but I grew to accept it.

Okay, I love this book. It's definitely gone on my favorites shelf. What I love about it is the absolute uniqueness of it. I've never read anything like it. It's urban fantasy, one of my favorite genres, but it's a completely different take on the urban fantasy/paranormal world. This story focuses on the Lost Colony of Roanoke. As many people know, the colony literally disappeared off the face of the earth. I've only read one other series, Blue Bloods, that worked with the mystery. This was ten times better.

In this version, the colony and the evil spirits were locked away behind a gate. It's basically what we would consider Hell. The Croatoan Native American, Manteo, locked the spirits and gods away with the help of Ananias Dare. The colony also gets sent behind the gates. It was a huge sacrifice and it is the reason that the colony disappeared. It's said that when the two Curse Keepers meet, the gates will open and they will have seven days to close it again.

Ellie is the current Dare Curse Keeper. She used to believe but when her mother died, she forgot everything and refused to relearn the everything she needed to know about being a Curse Keeper. Her mother didn't believe and she basically locked away her memories. It broke her father's heart because he was the Curse Keeper before her and she needed to know everything he knew. When all hell literally breaks loose, she can no longer go to him for answers because he has Alzheimer's. In the end, she does get her memories back and in a fantastic way. I love her character and her power.

Then we have Collin. He is the Manteo Curse Keeper. He's the typical smokin'
hot guy who is also a womanizer. He doesn't really care about anyone except himself. He's really an asshole in the beginning of the book and I seriously just wanted to punch him most of the time. But he is the Curse Keeper who knows the ceremony to close the gates and they need each other to close them. He's super secretive and he untrustworthy. Stupid gorgeous asshole. I love him and I hate him.

What's also great about this book is the multiple mysteries and plot lines. They aren't confusing and they add to the story. It's like Swank throws in real life with the fantasy. We get normal characters and real world problems. Ellie is broke and the family is is almost in foreclosure. Ellie also has a great best friend, Claire, and she adds to the story as well. I think it's a great little departure from the usual urban fantasies. I'll say it again, it's unique.

The ending. Oh my goodness the ending. I saw it coming but still. It was so intense and so heartbreaking and just, ah. I won't spoil it but it's just so hard to read. I seriously wanted to scream at Ellie and Collin. It was a really good ending and it set up a great story arc for the next book.

So far this seems to be a trilogy with three short stories. I'm definitely going to read the short story and I'm jumping into the The Curse Breakers as soon as I can. This is a definite recommend. Read it!!

If you want to read more about it, go to Denise Grover Swank's website and the Curse Keepers website.

This was a 2.5 star book, but irritating enough to be more 2 stars than 3. And it was *really* irritating, with cheesy dialogue, laughable sex scenes, and lots of Sookie Stackhouse-style dilemmas about work, clothes, make-up and laundry. Ellie was pathetic and felt very unreal, and I just didn't like Collin. Not a nice guy at all.

The basic idea was good, but I skimmed the last 50 pages or so because I was getting very bored with the way the book was written, and I won't be bothering with the rest of the series.

I fell in love with books by Denise Grover Swank when I found the Rose Gardner Series. While waiting for the next in that series, I decided to give this series a try. I was not disappointed! This story has mystery, magic, friendship and love. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know Ellie and Collin in this book. Once again Denise writes characters you can't help but love and root for as they face their challenges.
