Strong bit of crime noir in a very interesting universe.

I've owned this for a long while and just did a re-read so I can read Vol Two The Definitive Harcover Collection. Re-reading this felt refreshing, and it felt like after many years later the story still fresh. It is similar to that Detective Comics from the Batman line many years ago, when it featured Gotham detectives, the ones who have no superpowers or abilities like the Batman.

Bendis's works are one of the best, I just hope that his quality of storytelling doesn't drop when I am done reading this series. Oeming partnered with Bendis is superb.

I cannot wait to read the next volume.

Good...but not great. The best part of the book was Warren Ellis doing a ride-along, which I found hilarious.

Quite enjoyed the noir meets super heroes story and the dynamic between the main characters was developing nicely, but felt there needed to be more "powers" in the story. The bonus features were very interesting (except the too long letters section).

Bendis knows how to handle crime stories even in a such unusual world as the one from Powers. These 3 first stories are uneven, I've loved the Retro-Girl story arc, not so much the other two. I will go on with the series, anyway. Walker has still too many secrets to tell

"Fuck superheroes, frankly. The notion that these things dominate an entire culture is absurd. It's like every bookstore in the planet having ninety percent of its shelves filled by nurse novels...Superhero comics are like bloody creeping fungus--and they smother everything else."

If you want something to break up some big reading (1 massive Vietnam war novel, 1 Russian classic & 1 recent lit fic) graphic novels & comics are the way to go. Personally I don't distinguish between the two genres.

I've been meaning to read Bendis for a while. You can't really read The Amazing Adventures of Fan Boy and Goth Girl and not wonder what the deal is with this Bendis guy. I was at the library yesterday and thought I'd see what I could see and conveniently found this big set of "Powers," which has 2 different volumes in it 1: Who Killed Retro Girl? and 2: Roleplay as well as a bunch of extras.

I liked the meshing of noir, police procedural and superhero genres. This is definitely one you don't just flip through quickly, it's very dialogue heavy, which is my preference. I plan to continue reading these as I can find them at the library, they will be a really nice break from all the rest of my heavier stuff.
