This book is absolutely adorable. The pictures are extremely well done, creating flow through the story and showing emotions very well. l love the Abuela character, she is very kind, we all need elders like her.

Julián Is a Mermaid is an excellent example of how representation helps give us words to explain who we are and the book does it at an appropriate level for young children.

I highly recommend this for children and people young at heart.

Some books are made by adults to teach kids a lesson, but in the process they make a book that doesn't really make sense to most kids. Adults love books like this. Kids don't. I understand the well-meaning place this book is coming from, but this is not the best book for its purpose. This book was written to challenge adults more than make children feel seen.

This is a cute book and the art is beautiful

Julian and his Abdula are a sweet message of love an acceptance

But drag is for adults or at least it was until 5 seconds ago, and it's always been sexual and sexualized, drag is for nightclub acts.

I know it seems stuffy but I think it's bad safeguarding to blur so many boundries between adult and kid activities.

And the kid was in his underwear too often it, unnecessarily (not that there is ever any reason ever. for a childrens book to have nude or mostly nude bodies). I don't think it was intentionally odd but again, normalizing poor safeguarding practices, nude or partially nude portrayals of children are a firm no.
