Streatfeild is able to create a voice that's charming and also exceptionally realistic about the business of acting, and I admire that so, so much. It may be time to reread some of the others, but I think this may be my favorite Shoes book so far.

A return to the Academy of Dancing and Stage Training from Ballet Shoes! Although that is fun, too much of the same is not a good thing; as other reviewers have mentioned, there is too much similarity to the first book. On the other hand, rather than solitary orphans, the main characters are suddenly confronted with a large theatrical family, and along with the interesting glimpses of life in wartime London, that presents the greatest interest. More interaction among the cousins, and a more carefully worked-out ending would have improved the whole book greatly; as it is, it seems as though Streatfeild had to suddenly meet a deadline or stick to a reduced number of pages, and cut the book off in a hurry.

I adored this as a child, and I find it less wonderful now. I still love Ballet Shoes with all my heart, but this has dwindled a bit in my affection.

While it is not quite as good as "Ballet Shoes," this book was a solid sequel. Set during WWII, "Theater Shoes" is a great book for children to learn about life during the war in England. Ration cards, soliders, and food shortages are mentioned. While the novel isn't all sunshiny and rainbows (Streatfeild would never do that), it has just the right amount of desperateness and war-time squalor for elementary school kids, while still remaining upbeat. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not as good as the first book (Ballet Shoes). But it is still a great book. Set in WWII, it is a good book to introduce children to the war. Ration cards, food and clothing shortages, and war prisoners are mentioned throughout the novel. Despite this, the novel, thanks to Streatfeild's mastery, remains uplifting and optimistic.
2019 Re-read: This is my second favorite novel by Streatfeild (partly because we get to see glimpses of Pauline, Petrova, and Posey- those girls will always and forever have my heart #fossilgirlsrule.) But I do love Sorrel, Mark, and Holly in their own right. They are plucky little things surviving the end of World War II in London and despite the backdrop of war and food/clothing rationing, the book feels optimistic and strong.
