Thank you to @scholastic_au for sending me a copy of this one. I love reading Sarah Rees Brennan's novelisations of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, they add a little bit extra to the characters of the show. This one is set between Part 2 and Part 3 of the show and explores Sabrinas first attempt at rescuing Nick from Hell. The story has POV's from Sabrina in Greendale, Nick in Hell and Ambrose and Prudence in Europe hunting Father Blackwood. I find these books give more insight into each character, in this one we learn more about Nick's past as he struggles in Hell. Sabrina and her mortal friends have to face some truths they may not want to on there quest to save Nick. And Prudence and Ambrose learn more about each other. I love that in the books Salem talks to Sabrina. Aunt Hilda and Zelda are also present throughout the story helping and supporting Sabrina after the events that led to Nick going to Hell and her finding out who her true father is.

The previous two books felt a lot closer to the series than this one and to me, I assume, that it sets in between the events in Part 2 and Part 3. I ASSUME, OKAY, I ASSUME.

Overall, I really love the story. I also love the part with Harvey and the ghost kids. That was so so cute. Also, Lilith reigning as queen in hell? She really said "You could be the king, but watch the queen conquer." HOHOHOHOHO

Anyway, 4/5 from me. It was a quick read for me and I was expecting something a little closer to Part 3 but oh well, I hope there's another book coming! Would love to read a little more about Caliban ;)

SRB always delivers. These are facts. Though the third installment in this series had plenty of her trademark humor, it also dug deeper into these characters in a way I wasn't totally prepared for (which is silly, because that's basically Her Brand). It made me cry more than I thought it would. I loved these books so much they made me love the show, and I can only hope they continue to bring such richness to its world.

And shout-out to Theo, MVP of this book. Also if this doesn't take a turn for Harvey/Sabrina/Nick, I don't even know.

This one was a bit difficult to follow, going from past to present constantly.

This is a captivating addition to the supernatural realm, offering readers a bewitching blend of dark magic and teenage struggles. Brennan skillfully weaves a tale that follows Sabrina Spellman as she navigates the complexities of being a half-witch torn between two worlds.

The author's vivid descriptions create an immersive experience, allowing readers to envision the eerie landscapes of the magical realm and feel the palpable tension in every spell cast. Sabrina's character development is a highlight, as she grapples with her newfound powers and confronts moral dilemmas that come with the dark arts.

The pacing keeps the reader engaged, with twists and turns that add suspense to the narrative. Brennan successfully balances the supernatural elements with the relatable challenges of adolescence, making this book accessible to a broad audience.

While "Path of Night" continues the chilling adventures of Sabrina, it stands out for its exploration of identity, sacrifice, and the consequences of wielding forbidden powers. Fans of the series will find this installment a satisfying continuation, and newcomers will be drawn into the spellbinding world crafted by Sarah Rees Brennan.

As someone who was disappointed (to put it mildly) by the conclusion of the TV series, this is a welcome reprieve. The reasons are spoilery, so they'll go under a cut - but generally, once again, I am here to praise Brennan's grasp of emotions. She's an author that hits the sweet spot between comedy and pain in just the right proportions - I chuckled as many times as I felt her hit emotional resonance. Sabrina TV series is dark not just because there's cannibalism and human sacrifice in it, but because there's betrayal, longing for family and abuse from those one trusts in the name of some purported higher cause - and SR Brennan really gets it.

I particularly love Prudence, as always - her dedication to her siblings really guts me.

SpoilerAt one point, Harvey says:
'That's the made up bit. ... In stories, people come up with reasons why they have to cut down a girl with power. Why hurting her is a good thing to do. Like that's how the story always has to be.'
'These stories reinforce the inherent misogyny of the system,' said Roz.

I really, really wish the TV series had had that much self-awareness. (And if that's too much to ask, that it didn't romanticise suicide.)

I know we don't really have control over these things but if you're planning on having a lockdown birthday this year, I'd highly recommend against it. It's samey and boring and likely to not be the best day in the year which is what it is definitely meant to be. The only shining beacon on my birthday this year was the release of Sarah Rees Brennan's third Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tie-in, Path of Night.

Path of Night takes place immediately after the events in part 2 of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Nick Scratch is in Hell and Ambrose and Prudence have travelled to Europe to track down Father Blackwood. If you've watched part 3 of the series, you'll know that there's not very much time between the two series at all and so Sarah Rees Brennan takes a deep dive into each of the characters, giving us more insight than ever into Sabrina, Nick, Harvey, Ros, Theo, Prudence and Ambrose.

In Path of Night, Sabrina learns that in order to save Nick, she must appeal to the Lady of the Lake and embark on a series of quests along with Harvey, Ros and Theo. The only problem is that the quests will come at a great personal cost and one which the friends might not be able or willing to pay.

After loving the first two of Sarah Rees Brennan's tie-ins, I knew I was going to love Path of Night and I'm left thirsting for more CAOS and definitely more of Sarah Rees Brennan's novelisations. Alas, I do not have a date yet for either part 4 of CAOS or another novelisation to follow Path of Night.

I listened to the audiobook edition of this novel, as I did with Season of the Witch and Daughter of Chaos and it was so good to listen to Jessie Vilinsky and Nicol Zanzarella again. I've long been ready to listen to anything these two wonderful narrators read and Path of Night was no exception.

For feeding my insatiable obsession with all things CAOS-related, I give Path of Night an excellent four out of five stars and cannot wait to see what comes next from this franchise. Highly recommended for all fans of Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and lovers of superior paranormal YA fiction.
