I'm a big fan of the Ava Lee series. If you are, too, this new series is a n0-brainer!

And, even if you're not a fan of Ava Lee, you can read this a completely stand alone series and still enjoy the heck out of it.

This is book 2 in Uncle series wherein we are given insight into the backstory and history of Ava Lee's business partner, "Uncle" Chow Tung. In this book, he is now the well established Mountain Master of the Fanling Heaven and Earth Society (the Triad). He has chosen to shift his gang fully away from drugs and focus exclusively on gambling and related ventures. Shifts in the competition are starting to eat into their profits, and he casts his eyes around for other ventures, as he also deals with the threat of incursions by rival gangs into his territories.

His gang is in Hong Kong. It's 1980 and China is starting to set up "special economic zones". Hamilton gives us a nice peek into how one of these cities grew, as we follow Uncle's new ventures in manufacturing and distribution of knock-off shirts and more. It's a page turner! I enjoy that each of Hamilton's books in the Ava Lee and now the Uncle series covers new ground. Highly recommend!

I thought this book would be boring but it was great! It tells us more about Uncle's back story and explains in a very easy to understand way, the economics of how Uncle was able to establish and expand his business into Communist China. It has a great ending so stick with the story if you find parts of it drag because of the economic/political aspects of the plot. The backstory is progressing to the point when Uncle and Ava actually meet and that will be a special story as well, can't wait to read that!

Wonderful!
