This is the largest book I've read in a long timeā€“it's almost 1,000 pages long, but evokes a much more expansive world than would reasonably fit in those scant pages.

It's also sneakily difficult to read. I'd often realize that the setting or scene had suddenly switched out from under me, and need to go back and re-read the section closely to figure out what happened.

Rarely has a series kept me so fascinated from start to finish. The world Wolfe creates feels eerily familiar but at the same time darkly surreal, a world built from the ruins (both physical and cultural) of our own society and countless others before and after our time. Wolfe's writing, full of unreliable narration and pseudo-invented words derived from legitimate Latin and Greek roots, creates a world that feels foreign yet familiar, but it becomes clear time and time again that not everything is as it seems. The end result is breathtaking and thought-provoking every step of the way, yet even as I finished it I couldn't help feeling that I'd only scratched the surface of Wolfe's world. Definitely calls for a re-read in the near future.

Possibly the best novel I have ever read.

When I finished the last page I had an intense urge to go back to the beginning and start again.

I added my review/rating to this version since this is very much one story published into 2 (or 4) volumes depending on the edition, but it demands being considered in its entirety.
