This was one of my most anticipated books that I've kept putting off to crack open at the right moment.

A Master of Djinn starts off great. The premise is fun and the world building is vivid. The latter kept me locked in. But the ultimate plot didn’t live up to my expectation and almost started to feel like a chore to get through. (I figured out the mystery waaay too early.) Plus the pacing is off, the characters are a bit flat, and the dialogue is clunky. So I have to give this a 2.5 rating.

If Clark decides to create a sequel, I'll still give it a go nonetheless. He knows how to deliver a magical world. But hopefully the plot and other areas previously addressed will be just as rich and imaginative.

(3.5/5) There were parts of this book that I loved:

- The fact that it's a fantasy not set in England (or even fantasy England where they pretend it's not but it is). I loved getting to see a steam-punk-ish Egypt with magic!! It gave me enough world-building to understand the world and be amazed without being overwhelmed
- That the main character, Fatma wears suits and generally kicks ass (and she's queer!!!!)

However, I found it lagged a lot in the middle and that's what took me awhile to get through it. I found the banter near the end freaking awesome and I wish there had been even more of that through the book! Overall, not my favourite but definitely worth a read if you were an Ancient Egypt kid.

Fascinating world, cool characters. Figured out the bad guy way before the main character. An enjoyable read.

Wanted to love this book so much but it didn’t live up to my expectations. The world building was very well done and I loved the unique magical elements, but I wasn’t drawn to the characters much and I guessed the big reveal easily. An overall well-written story, but was missing something.
