A tough read to be sureā€”it took me about 6 months to fully break through it. Once I did, though, it was incredibly rewarding. The characters are diverse, vibrant, and incredibly human. If you can hold out till the last ~150 pages, all of the development earlier in the book pays off spectacularly. A masterpiece.

Racism, sexism, and the main character(?) with minors all in the first two chapters. Also knowing who his wife is in the future makes me gag.

more than magical realism, this is a book about latin america. catholicism and mysticism, communists and military coups, all mixed together both in the generations of the del valle family as in our history.
