An excellent collection of Eastern European recipes. Most important substitutions can be found in a Polish grocery store. This may be a challenging book to use if you don’t have access to a Euromart of some kind. But the book is beautiful to read as well. The author is fun and funny.

Cookbooks totally count toward my goodreads challenge, right? RIGHT?

I tried 3 recipes, the lamb and chickpea stew, the mushroom soup, and the cucumber spears in vinegar. Easy to follow but nothing I tried was particularly good.

Wonderful insight into Eastern European cuisine as a whole.

Without having access to the regional produce, it's obviously hard for me to follow the recipes absolutely 100%, but after reading I still feel confident I can manage, and that deserves praise.

I feared that this book would focus a lot of meat-centric dishes, but was positively surprised that I was mistaken.

The beautiful pictures and fables of the author's youth really paint a wonderful landscape, too.

I only tried several of the bread recipes but so many others looked delicious, I'll definitely have to come back to them. While there are a few unusual ingredients, they'll normally have a more common substitute provided.

I love this book! I got it to learn more about my heritage & it didn’t disappoint. Not only is the cover gorgeous, but the overall feel is nice: solid, matte, and mouthwatering photos. I love how at the top of each page she wrote a very brief anecdote (where she got the recipe, her memory of it from her childhood, or her family’s history with it, or where it originally hails from country-wise). I’ve also tried 3 recipes so far & two were delicious (the third was gherkins and they molded, but I think that was my fault). I can’t wait to keep trying more of these recipes!
