I saw her speak yesterday and was floored to hear her read her own work. I LOVED the language in this book. A short read on a terrible subject, but the language....

So, I cannot say that I liked it better than the first one. However, this was the sort of book that I maybe should have read a few months ago.
Miah is dead. He knows it, and so do those who loved him. This story, in around 128 pages, goes through the grief and the process of moving on that each of those closest to him has to go through. It also gives the perspective of what it could be like for those on the other side. In holding on to them, they also hold onto us. There was definitely crying, but I'm glad that I read it. It helped me process things I have been holding on to.

This was almost as good as the first one. The characters are grieving and dealing with the aftermath of Jeremiah's death. The grieving process that is shown is gorgeously written and is so powerful. This book not only talked about grief in a real way, but it delved into talk of self-discovery and coming to terms with your sexuality. This was a book about inclusivity and where to find it when life seems to stop in its tracks. Finding the group that will hold you together when you need it the most.

This is a story about grief, self-discovery, and how to move on without forgetting.

This is a companion book to If You Come Softly which I read some time last year. If You Come Softly tells the story of Ellie, a young Jewish girl and Miah, a young black man who fall in love. It is a beautiful but tragic story that I'd highly recommend. If you haven't read it, I'd skip this review because there will be spoilers about the first book.

At the end of the first book, Miah is shot and killed by the police in a case of mistaken identity. Behind You is the story of what comes next. How his family and friends and loved ones move on. How to live when you've lost someone you love. And it also has glimpses of Miah's "life" on the other side, watching and waiting to let go.

Jacqueline's writing is just so beautiful and raw and real. She has written many books and I'll definitely be adding them to my list.
