I like this book more every time I read it. I've read it twice before, but this third time around was an even better reading experience than the last two.

The last time I read it I wrote, "The thing I like most about this book is the discussion you have with fellow readers about the issues raised in it. Thinking and talking about the problems a society faces, what people would be willing to give up to make those problems go away, and the costs/trade offs involved is always important and I appreciate when authors write books that encourage young adults to do that." Today, the wonderful rabid readers in our FMS book club had one of those discussions. It was fabulous! I am in awe of the points they raised in our discussion. They helped me see things from the book in a different way, and they helped me appreciate The Giver even more than I already did.

I have read this book twice now. Once five years ago before the movie came out and just at the end of August 2019.

The world in book is set in is odd. But it is beautifully written. It makes you wonder how things would be if our lives were like this. Never knowing true pain, your job being chosen for you, being a certain age to have a jacket the buttons in the front, to have only a bike to get you from point A to point B.

While I think in away it could take so much guess work out of things and maybe make life easier and simple, I also think life would be very boring. Never knowing the joys of the sun on your skin, or the pain of a sunburn. It is not life at all.

With all that said, I do enjoy this book a lot. I think it is a good book to read just for fun but also in school. There are so many talking points and ways to discuss this world. I do recommend all to read this book.

This was an interesting book with a very dark tone.  As you read through the book and get to know the main character Jonas, you realize his world is different than ours.  He is chosen to work with the Giver so he can be his successor.  He has to make some hard choices as he learns more about the memories that are hidden from the society. It was mostly a sad book for me.

This book makes you think... I feel like I was reading about a communist cult. I don't agree with this being a novel for middle school age children. Especially with what we are living thru right now.
