This book is the very book that sparked my love for reading. I still remember reading this beautiful novel in my bunk bed, hoping my sisters across the room wouldn't get me in trouble for keeping my lamp on.

The characters are rich with history, personality, personal fears, and human nature that broke my heart and returned my hope. An interesting plot following a relatable young woman through the many struggles of betrayal, fear, trust, learning to love again.

I flew through this book. It was captivating and even more so when I realized how modern the story was. I genuinely thought I was reading about the 1800's until the author started mentioning computers, air conditioning, blue jeans, etc. Completely blew my mind.

A look at a world which is hard for many American's to imagine. Each of the widows in the story has to have courage that goes beyond normal human ability. An inspiring story.

I read a lot of historical fiction books to my kids as part of their history program. I was really taken with this one. The story was fascinating. A young girl married at 13yo to a boy, just for the money that she will bring; abandoned at 17yo as a worthless widow; and then finally recognized as a real person with worth.

We had a hard time figuring out the time period that this was set in. We assumed that it was in the 1800's, but as the story went on there were more and more clues that brought it into the present. It was a great glimpse into how people from other cultures live.

Nice story of a girl from India rural area but meant for young readers so definitely with rosy colored glasses compared to real life. But a nice, easy read to make you feel good with a perfect ending for our heroine.
