I fell head over heals for Hamilton By Lin-Manuel and realized I knew nothing about Hip Hop or Rap Music. So I picked up this book at the Libary. This is an in-depth examination of the Hip-Hop Generation. I learned a lot of its history and how its history intersected the oppression felt by POC, by youth, by so many communities. If anything, what sticks in my mind is how the structural issues that the books ends on in 2000 are still in place today.

As other people have said, if you go into this expecting it to be about hip-hop music, you might be disappointed. It is most definitely about the generation and the socio-political factors that surrounded, influenced, and led to the music at every stage. There's some really powerful stuff in here, particularly on the riots towards the end of the book, and to have such a wealth of in depth information on a major cultural force that's barely studied in any serious or academic context is impressive. The writing flows effortlessly, and whilst it would be nice to have a follow up with everything post 2001, and how the hip-hop scene was adopted by other countries and their take on it, this will probably remain the definitive text for anyone wanting to discover how this entire generation came to be.

This is not a topic I know anything about, and at first I didn’t think I would make it through, but I really did learn a lot.

A perfect adaptation of the original book for young audiences. It's written so that young adults can really understand the history of music and activism. It would be a great companion with a soundtrack.
