While the story itself wasn't bad, I did feel it was written "down". I don't see an average 12-13 year old finding this to be on par or challenging enough to truly enjoy reading. Rather bland, to be really honest.

This was really bizarre. There was all this stuff about self-hate but it was never really addressed? Ellie was just all of a sudden like oh okay I love my body? Is this a situational self-hate that I have never experienced? The kind of shit Ellie was saying about her body didn't seem like the kind of thing that she could just get over in one day.

It was so scattered and I don't think Warner pulled the different pieces together very well.

I think I would have enjoyed this one as a kid - looking at the world of ballet was fascinating. As an adult - my biggest problem was that it felt unfinished. Almost the entire story involves the main character and her problems with body image, and how it is forced upon her by teachers and parents. This becomes the huge theme of the story, but somehow it just magically disappears in the end? Like any 13 year old girl is ever secure, much less after all of that internal and external drama? Three stars - there would have been another if not for that gappy ending.
