Seemed incomplete but was tons of fun. I'd recommend this to any parent with kids interested in King Arthur like fantasy stories.

I grabbed this book from the "junior fiction" section of my new local library earlier today, looking for a quick light read, and finished it after dinner. I found the beginning a little unpolished, but once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. I remember Disney's adaptation of the Black Cauldron, the second book in this series, but I don't believe I'd ever read this story before. Alexander's characters are vibrant and I think they would do (and have done, since these books are famous and beloved) a good job appealing to their target audience of young readers.

I found the story tended to lurch from action scene to action scene, but that kind of does a good job putting the reader in the mind of the main protagonist, who starts out looking for a lost pig and gradually finds himself in an adventure spun out of control. I'd recommend this story to a parent looking for fantasy stories to share with their child. Scary villains are mentioned but not dwelt on, and (tiny spoiler alert) evil is conquered by saying its name.

Taran, an assistant pig farmer at Caer Dallben, is thrust into an adventure to rescue the oracular pig Hen Wen from the Horned King and Arawn Death-Lord. Along his journey, Taran brings together a group of strangers who grow to form a close-knit group.

A fantasy-adventure story for late-middle school.

2.75 rounded up. Whimsical fun. Light stuff but brief. Reminded me a lot of chronicles of narnia but has way more personality. Will definitely give the next one a shot.
