a mess

I almost didn’t finish this book. I’m really not sure why I stuck with it. From typographical errors, to weird geography, to truly one dimensional characters with few redeeming traits, it was not enjoyable.

I’m not sure if it’s because I listened to this rather than read a physical copy, but this book was BORING. everything was pretty predictable and there was a lot of back and forth that wasn’t related to character building or adding substance to the plot/suspense of finding out what happened.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a rollercoaster of betrayals, misleads, addiction, and the different forms that love can take.

"I was happy my husband died, but I couldn’t admit it, otherwise people might think I killed him."

SOME DAYS ARE DARK follows Olivia, recently widowed and prime suspect in her husbands murder. A murder which she claims she had nothing to do with and will stop at nothing to prove her innocence.

I really enjoyed my time reading SOME DAYS ARE DARK. Olivia isn't an overtly likeable character, but as more pieces of the puzzle revealed themselves, the reasons for her personality flaws became clearer. There were several twists and turns, however none of them "shocked" me (but I didn't guess them either!) However, this didn't take away from my reading enjoyment - it was just a slow burn read. I do enjoy my thrillers to have a solid, jaw dropping ending and I definitely felt that this book delivered one.

Recommended to readers who enjoy domestic thrillers and family dramas.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for my ARC copy!

A great thriller for those that don't enjoy their thrillers too dark or upsetting. A promising new thriller writer Miranda Smith makes her debut with a thriller that opens with the line 'I'm glad my husband is dead. But I can't admit it.' The novel continues with enough pace and intrigue to excite and engage.

It's not evilly twisted or anything. I was really interested in the mystery but as this book was a slow burn, it took forever for the killer to be revealed.

It's a perfectly fine book. It's just a bit long.

I was all set to give this review 5 stars. I enjoyed reading it, it kept my interest, and for some reason, I really liked the reporter. However, she should have ended it a few sentences from the end. I hated that particular part of the conclusion and that “twist” didn’t add anything but disappointment. She is a good writer, but I wonder if I should read more of her books. It’s like she kept wanting to pile more twists and ruined it for me. Oh well, maybe I’ll give her another chance.

Some Days are Dark makes some mighty big promises in that subtitle. Sadly, it doesn't quite deliver for me. The opening line of the book was certainly promising, and I was all set to hunker down and enjoy the read. Now, I will say that the book is well written for the most part. The writing is crisp and sharp, and this one could've been at least close to the promise in the subtitle had it not been dragged out quite so far. But it is what it is, and the longer this one went on, the less I wanted to keep pushing through. My biggest problem is that the plot has been done and done again, and it was way too predictable - and yes, that includes what I'm assuming is supposed to be the 'breathtaking twist.' Honestly, I think I would've enjoyed that twist more had I not been looking for it, but since I was looking for it, I just wound up disappointed. The author does give us some interesting characters in this one. None of them likable, but they are interesting in that looking at a train wreck sort of way. In the end, this one was more domestic drama than anything else. I didn't get that sense of tension or urgency due to the predictability of it, so I can't really say that I felt any real suspense or thrills. It's just too bad that the rest of the book didn't live up to the terrific opening line.

The opening line of this book will suck you in " I was happy my husband died but I couldn't admit it" What??! Also the cover of this book is amazing! The story was good, but for me it dragged in places and felt a bit too long.

Olivia's second husband Dane is murdered in their home - and she is the prime suspect. That is until a man confesses to the crime. We learn about Olivia and her first husband, and how that marriage broke down. How she meets and marries Dane and their life together. And then we learn about Olivia after the murder. Did she kill her husband? She is not a likeable character and has made a lot of very bad choices. I struggled to feel anything for her.

Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
