by and large pretty okay until, right in the middle, a great, interesting comic about a suicide bomber which was easily the best of the bunch.

Excellent. I can see why people criticize him for being emotionally terse, or not having the patience to follow through on an idea, but I think they're missing the point. Most of the actual stories we tell don't have superior narrative arcs either. Like any artist's collection, this one benefits from seeing how the art and content have developed over time. There is an overarching storyline, but it's biographical, and implicit (even when he's writing autobiographically). It lurks in the background of these mostly short, repetitive vignettes, and only emerges when you consider them together.
