Where do we start?

This is a huge ass book that doesn't seem to end. And I'm saying this in a good way. Less politics, more action, more suspense and more gods.

I like how the book held everything together for one final volume. But even if you don't read that one, it still feels like the story is over. The job is done.

If the final boss fight is happening, let me say that till now we do not know who that is going to be. Brilliantly written, this is turning out to be a great find.

If Ward excels at one thing, it is at creating characters and scenarios in which you do not know which side to root for. His characters are well written, and get put through the wringer in this one. We now have two main sides to the conflict, with the Hadari Emperor looking to invade the Tressians to the north. The twist in this novel is that the gods of this world get fully involved, and choose sides in the conflict. They fight alongside the troops, scheme and manipulate against each other, and are terrors on the battlefield. Seeing the gods enter the fray was unbelievably exciting and led to many page turning moments.

While these epic battles are occurring, there is scheming and politicking occurring in the capital. The parliament of crows are aiming to enhance their power in the region, and take the steps involved to do so. Their storyline with Malachi provided thrilling battle sequences, and moments of horror and dread. The crow market and their members are absolute stand outs in this series, and I thoroughly enjoy them anytime they appear on the page.

Legacy of Steel took all of the best qualities of Ash, and dialed it all up. If you’re looking for a classic fantasy story involving gods, political scheming, epic battles, and great characters, then Ward’s Legacy series is for you!

Legacy of Steel // written by Matthew Ward

I had so many good things to say about Legacy of Ash, book 1 of this amazing trilogy, and honestly, I'm not really sure what to add to that. Writing reviews for later books in a series after raving about the first one has always been something I disliked because how can I rave about all this awesome action without spoiling it for anybody? Sigh. The struggles of a reviewer. Hah. But really though, this is an incredible continuation with great character work, epic action that keeps you on the edge of your seat, depth into things you only got a glimpse of in book 1, and the same conflicting feelings about your personal alliances to the characters. I loved returning to this world and am excited to be reading book 3 right now!

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Really would like to give it 3.5. Writing this review after the fact since I noticed it was missing. I loved the characters, didn't love the pacing. I kinda loved how this one ended and didn't feel the need to pick up book 3. Could see myself grabbing it when I'm craving another epic.
