A beautiful blend of comedy and suspense. An excellent read for young, teen and adult sci-fi fans.

Just read some stuff about Jay Kristoff and I do not want to support him by buying another one of his books. Not sure if I want to finish the series now, but if I decide to I will probably rent them from the library.
Original review:
I was surprised I liked this book as much as I did. The writing seems very juvenile at first, but if you can get through the first nauseatingly perky 40% of the book, things start to ramp up and get interesting. I like the found family aspect of the book and am excited to find out what happens next. I do wish that the plot had not been quite so easy to guess. Even when there were no hints toward big reveals I was still able to guess everything. However, I love Finian, Kal, and Zila enough that I didn't really care that Scarlett, Tyler, and Aurora were all fairly bland and uninspiring. There were a couple of red herrings when it came to romance, but I honestly think that the whole crew should have just been in one giant polyamorous relationship with each other, because I saw potential in literally every pairing (except for the twins because no).
Honestly I was middle of the road on Cat until the ending. She was fine on her own, but I could not for the life of me figure out what she saw in Tyler. He was boring as hell, and never seemed to give her the time of day after having sex with her. And then we are supposed to believe that after all the crap he pulled with her, and his weird sort of pining after Aurora the whole damn book, that he actually loved Cat? I honestly was rooting for Cat and Finian and I'm kind of sad that she is "dead" (I'm not actually convinced that she is dead. I feel like they might find some mystic way to free her later on).
Even with all of the criticism I have for the book, I am still going to rate it 4 stars because I love the found family aspect, and I am cutting it a little slack for being so YA. I have been tired of YA scifi/fantasy lately, so I want to make sure that I'm not being too biased against it. As far as I'm concerned, having 5 out of 7 main characters with actual distinct, semi-well-developed personalities is pretty good for a YA scifi/fantasy book (I'm looking at Scarlett and Tyler for being bland and forgettable).

Aurora Rising is the first book in the series "Aurora Cycle" and it follows the journey of a space squad as they try to figure out the powers of their new friend and what secrets her past holds. This futuristic sci-fi novel has a sort of found family trope, adventures, aliens, and a touch of romance.
I like stories being told through multiple points of view, but I think this book overdid it a bit, as there were quite a few main characters. The switching back and forth was pretty confusing, as were the futuristic names, which made it hard to follow at times. As someone who doesn't love a lot of violence in their books, I found the few fist-fights and injuries described not too overwhelming, and I would recommend this book for 14+
