So I reread this after reading when I was a kid because I found it at one of those take a book leave a book things and needed an easy read. This book is so cute. It’s interesting and the world is very much giving Alice in wonderland but darker? In a way. I liked all the characters. There was a good mix of really different personalities. For a kids book it was pretty good if not a little creepy.
I'm pretty sure this book is where my deep and unashamed love of Sphinx cats began. Somber Kitty and May Bird are characters that I unfortunately forgot about for a period of time, but after finishing this book, I feel as though they've never left. Young Kat was very much like May Ellen Bird and reading May's interaction with her classmates was painful and cringe inducing, but also made for a very relatable character- even though there is an eight year age gap.
The world building was unbelievable and filled me with joy. The Ever After is a beautifully thought out realm and it's books like this that make me full to the brim with happy, giddy feels.
I will admit I was incredibly stressed throughout the duration of the book, and if you decide to read it you'll understand why, but it was definitely worth the stress.

I don't have much to say about this book, so I'll keep it short. It's charming and fun to read, with interesting settings and intriguing characters. While certainly geared towards younger readers, it can definitely be enjoyed by adults as well.

These books played a huge part in starting my love for reading. I read them in middle school and I love them even today. I definitely recommend this series! The characters are fun, and the story is exciting!
When I was a kid, I wasn’t into series of books. I don’t know if there just weren’t as many published, if I skipped over the Young Adult section, or if my reading interests just led me elsewhere. My niece Rebecca, who has recently garnered an email address, has long been one of the young people in my life whose reading I watch and follow. A few weeks ago in an email where I asked about her babysitting availability, I also asked - as I do at every opportunity - what she was reading. Then I reserved it at the library and, the week before Christmas, read it.
May Bird and the Ever After was...different than I expected. Granted, I didn’t read the dust jacket (I rarely do), but somehow I always find myself surprised when a YA book is scary. This one isn’t any worse than Harry Potter - it was just a topsy-turvy-turning book, in which there’s courage in unexpected heroes. It was fast-paced and entertaining and I liked how May traveled down the hero’s path (loosely stated) with pizzazz that had me liking her and trembling that had me rooting for her.
I couldn’t get over the feeling, though, that this sort of YA series is for younger readers - 5th or 6th graders - and not as much for junior high age readers. All in all, enjoyable.
Fair warning: content deals with ghosts and specters; the “Ever After” is where the dead and undead reside. So maybe it’s not so much for younger readers, though the main character is only ten.

5 stars for the simple fact that I love it so much and it is so nostalgic and I would read it over and over, v excited to read the rest of the series, YA is unmatched

I read this when I was about 14 I think. I really loved it, the story came alive and i could just imagine the world of the dead, I REALLY recommend this book to anyone really, any age can enjoy this book
