Fantasy is not in my wheel house, but Throne of Glass had me at the beginning. Celaena is an assassin that has been in prison and summoned to the castle to strike a deal. The King is looking for a Champion and the Prince has found her to put her up against several others in the competition.

Something evil is lurking in the castle trying to take down the competitors one by one, but someone has decided to help Celaena by trying to protect her so she can stay alive and keep competing. Besides Celaena herself (because she is a badass female), Chaol is my favorite character. He has been assigned to train her  to win. He is described as a fierce warrior, but you can tell that he is a squishy bear of a man inside.

Even though I was reluctant to read this title, look out Crown of Midnight....here I come!

First, I’m so glad I read AB before this book. AB set me up to care more for Celaena and I think if I had read this first, she wouldn’t have grown on me because I don’t find her quite as lovable in this book. Also being able to catch subtle references was nice. Second, I liked this book but you can really feel that SJM hasn’t fully fleshed out her style yet. I imagine the writing will improve as the series progresses but this book definitely felt young. So! Many! Exclamation! Marks! Excited to keep reading but missing the “can’t put this book down” feeling.
