I really am absolutely captivated by this series. I wasn't sure how I would feel about a story dedicated to Elezor, but it was really interesting to get inside his head and see his demons, both metaphorical and literal. And as with Lord of the White Hell, the worldbuilding and political landscape is really complex and nuanced. I miss them being schoolboys a little bit, but this is a fitting next step.

I keep waiting for these books to suck harder and they just don't, yet. This series seems to be more interested in trauma than in negotiating cultural difference, so the characters aren't as interesting. It also feels less like an anime novelization. Still really solid, though.

I've only read one book in the series this one is spun off from, but I didn't feel like it impacted my enjoyment in any way. If anything, I now want to go back and read that series too. Sometimes lots of magicky stuff loses me, especially when I want to read something I don't want to think about too much, but this one kept my interest. Basically, if you already like Ginn Hale, you'll probably like this book too. And if you haven't but you enjoy some light fantasy/romance, give these books a shot.

I didn't think I could love this anymore than the Lord of the White Hell series, but I did! It was so fun to read and I can't wait to devour the 2nd book. Elezar & Skellan are just ♥♥♥♥!

I feel like this book was written specifically FOR me. Magic, sword fights, secret identities, countries on the brink of war, characters battling Big Evil forces....... my weakness. Looking forward to book 2!
